Boston Engagement Session Locations

Advice

Looking for Boston engagement session locations? This city is full of hidden gems and iconic spots that are perfect for capturing your love story. Whether you’re dreaming of a carefully planned route with multiple scenic stops or a more spontaneous, go-with-the-flow walkable session, Boston’s charm and rich history offer endless possibilities. From cobblestone streets to waterfront views, there’s something magical about this city that makes it the perfect place to take your engagement photos. It is walkable and easy to explore!

As a Boston photographer, I’m excited to share my favorite tips to help you find the perfect location for your engagement session. I love capturing moments in the city that holds such a special place in my heart.

Boston engagement session locations at Christopher Columbus Park

Christopher Columbus Park & The North End

Christopher Columbus Park is an overlooked location for engagement photos. It is a hidden gem with views of the harbor, marina, and easy access to the North End. The park’s trellis is beautiful in both summer with vines and winter with lights. Afterward, it is an easy, quick walk to The North End. The North End is great for exploring the neighborhood and stopping for dessert or a glass of wine to end your session.

Boston Engagement Session Locations

Pier’s Park In East Boston is a great option for engagement photos! This beautifully landscaped park has great views of the Boston skyline across the harbor. It’s a quiet, waterfront spot with fewer crowds. It is perfect for couples who want city views and a relaxed atmosphere.

Boston Public Garden Engagement Photos

The Boston Public Garden is a popular photo location for a good reason! It is located in the heart of the city, with weeping willows, seasonal flowers, and beautiful city views. This location is great for couples who love gardens, classic Boston landmarks, and a touch of nature in the city. Public parking is available in the Public Garden which is convenient for a city location. I recommend heading out for a date night after your session on Beacon Hill at one of the many great restaurants.

Back Bay & The Esplanade

Back Bay is another iconic area in Boston known for its historic architecture and bustling commercial streets. This area is perfect for couples who just want to walk along Comm Ave, Beacon Street, and near the Prudential Center to explore the area. Some spots are very busy, but others are more calm and quiet. You will see traditional brownstones without going into Beacon Hill.

I highly recommend visiting Commonwealth Ave for the magnolia blooms in the spring. Then head to The Esplanade. It is just a short walk to the Charles River with sailboats, docks, and scenic pathways. Your photos will then have a variety of backdrops including water and city views. It is especially lovely at sunset.  The sun sets right on the river – can’t beat it!

Beacon Hill Engagement Photos

Beacon Hill is of course one of the most iconic and well-known places in Boston. When people think of Boston they picture the infamous Acorn Street and its historic cobblestone roads. This is perfect for couples who love history, classic architecture, and a charming city vibe. Your photos will be elegant and timeless. I would highly recommend planning an early morning session to lessen the number of crowds and people in the streets.

Boston Engagement Session Locations in the Seaport

Fan Pier Park in the Seaport is a fan favorite! This newly designed location offers spectacular waterfront views of the Boston skyline as a backdrop. It is walkable and close to other locations on the Harborwalk like the Institue of Contemporary Art Boston. It would be easy to stop at a restaurant or bar to end your session afterward and turn it into a date night.

Arnold Arboretum Engagement Photographer

In Jamaica Plain, the Arnold Arboretum is full of seasonal flowers and foliage, offering a peaceful, nature-filled spot in the city. Ideal for couples who want more nature than urban scenery and want to be away from the crowds. It is secluded and peaceful with over 200 acres and flat trails to explore! It is free to enter and dogs are allowed on leash.

Boston Public Library Engagement Photos

The Boston Public Library is one of my very favorite Boston engagement locations! A permit is required, but it is well worth it. The library has grand architecture, marble staircases, and a stunning courtyard. It is a great spot for couples who love culture and architecture and a more formal vibe to their engagement session. Be sure to check out Taylor and Brenden’s chic and sophisticated engagement photos.

Things to Consider When Planning Your Boston Engagement Session

  • Expect crowds – In the city, you can expect it to be busy! Some people walking by may want to stop and see you taking your photos! Work with your photographer to select times of day and seasons that are less crowded and more laid-back if this might bother you. We’ll probably see others taking photos so you don’t need to feel embarrassed!
  • Parking – It can be challenging to find parking in the city. Most of the places mentioned will have public garages but keep in mind that will be an additional cost.
  • Permits – Most of the places mentioned above do not require special permits! Be sure to confirm this ahead of time if you have another Boston location in mind.
  • Plan Ahead – If you can, schedule your hair and make-up trial the day of your engagement photos. That way you will look photo-ready without needing to have your hair and makeup done twice. Then make a day of it! After your session, there is an abundance of restaurants and attractions to visit and explore while you are dolled up!
  • Bring Your Dog – Most of these locations are pet-friendly! If you want to bring your dog – let’s do it! Do try to plan to have someone come and help with your dog so they are well taken care of while we capture all your portraits.
  • Footwear – Walking on cobblestones can be tricky in heels! Bring a pair of flats to wear or shoes that are comfortable to walk to and from various locations.
  • Changing into a second outfit  – Sometimes we will be able to use public restrooms to change outfits. Sometimes we stop at a hotel or cafe or head back to your car to change! We will go with the flow but I do always recommend bringing a second outfit.
  • Bring a Small Bag – Bring along a small bag to hold your essentials. I will always offer to hold things while we are taking photos, but this is something to keep in mind when walking through the city.
