If you’re nervous before your photography session, here’s how I help you feel comfortable in front of the camera.

How I Help You Feel Comfortable in Front of the Camera

Advice

If you’re feeling uncomfortable about being photographed, I totally get it! Honestly, I feel the same way when I’m in front of the camera. As your engagement and wedding photographer, I’m here to support you through the entire process so you can step in front of the camera feeling like the best version of yourself! Whether you’re a little nervous or just unsure of what to expect, here’s how I’ll help you feel comfortable in front of the camera.

It Starts With Connection

Whether you’re naturally affectionate or a little more reserved, I love getting to learn more about you before our session. I’ll send over a thoughtful questionnaire that helps me understand your dynamic as a couple. I truly enjoy learning about your personalities, your story, and even the little things that light you up! I want to shape the session around who you are, not who you think you need to be. It’s all about creating a space that feels familiar, relaxed, and as comfortable as possible.

Gentle Direction (Not Stiff Posing)

Helping you feel at ease throughout the entire session is my biggest priority. Instead of rigid poses, I’ll give gentle direction that sparks natural movement and connection. I like to start with easy, lighthearted prompts to help break the ice. Then, as you get more comfortable, I’ll let your energy and vibe guide the rest of the session. I’ll also occasionally show you a few photos on the back of my camera. This helps us make small adjustments, like hair or hand placement. Plus, you get to see just how beautiful the moments already are!

Every couple is different, and I make sure to tailor each session to your vibe. If you’re feeling unsure or awkward, I’m here for you! I’m always happy to answer any questions or address concerns you have. Or, if you’re lost in the moment, I’ll step back and let it naturally unfold.

Focusing on Moments, Not Perfection

The photos you’ll treasure most are the ones where you feel confident, connected, and relaxed. That’s why I stay away from overly curated or “perfect” portraits. Instead, I prioritize capturing candid, meaningful moments. By focusing on your bond, that warmth and comfort will naturally shine through in the images. It’s these real moments that matter most and what you’ll cherish for years to come!

How to Feel Relaxed During Your Session

Here are a few of my favorite ways to ease your nerves and help you feel comfortable in front of the camera.

Setting the Tone with Music

Music is a great way to help you relax and enjoy getting photographed! In your pre-session questionnaire, I’ll ask about your favorite songs. I’ll check in again the day of to see what you’re currently loving. That way, we can create a playlist that loosens things up and makes the experience more personal to you.

Choose a Location Special to You

To make your session feel more natural, I recommend choosing a location that already holds special meaning. Maybe it’s where you got engaged, your first date spot, your favorite place to view fall foliage, or your go-to weekend escape. I’ve found that when nerves are present, choosing familiar surroundings can help you feel much more relaxed and at home. In addition, it also adds an extra layer of meaning to your photos.

Bring Along Your Pet

I’m all for you including your pets in your session! They’re wonderful icebreakers and also give you something playful to draw your attention to. Just as important, they can help you feel more comfortable and at ease in front of the camera. If you can, bring a friend along or hire a service to watch your pet while we get some pictures of just you two. What Past Clients Have Said

Here’s what some of my past couples have said about their time together with me!

“Kerri I really, truly, from the bottom of my heart knew that you were the perfect choice for us, but just scrolling through I am so happy that we chose you to capture our day. There is no exaggeration when I say you were put on this earth to do what you do and we feel so lucky to have you!”

“Thank you from the bottom of our hearts, Kerri! You have so gorgeously captured the essence of our connection, with such a timeless and stunning aesthetic and editing. We are over the moon! Again, we are so grateful for the ambiance, experience, and memories that you made on our day together. Over the next few days, I will curate and post the favorites (shouting you out and keeping you tagged) so that hopefully my friends get to have the same experience with you.”

If being in front of the camera makes you nervous, you’re not alone—and I hope this gave you a little more confidence and clarity around what to expect! My goal is always to create a calm, supportive experience that helps you feel like yourself, so your connection can shine through naturally.
