Wondering what happens if it rains on your wedding day? Here are my top tips and rain plans for rainy day celebrations.

You plan for months, or even years, for your wedding day, so it’s completely natural to feel a little anxious about the weather. But what actually happens if it rains on your wedding day? The good news is that a rainy day can create some unexpected, beautiful moments. It often adds intimacy, softness, and a unique sense of charm that sunny skies can’t always create.
To give you a glimpse of what that can look like, here are a few rainy wedding photos from couples who leaned in, embraced the weather, and created something just as beautiful.

If you’re worried about what happens if it rains on your wedding day, you’re not alone! Lots of couples have shared their concerns with me during the wedding planning process. Here are a few ways I’ll work with you and the weather to make sure your day still feels just as special.
Even if you’re hoping for sunshine, as your Boston wedding photographer, I’ll work with you to create a wedding rain plan you feel confident about. This will include a rainy day timeline as well as identifying cozy or covered locations ahead of time. That way, even if the weather isn’t perfect, your photos and moments will still feel beautiful and full of meaning.
I always consider the potential for rain when scouting your wedding venue. Some venues, like Granite Links, have a solid rain plan already built in, whether that means an indoor option or a pavilion tent if the weather turns. Other venues may have fewer options, but I’ll make sure we have a plan in place to adjust if needed.
It’s always smart to include umbrellas and waterproof items as part of your rainy day plan. I bring clear umbrellas for my clients, as well as protective gear for my cameras, so we can capture soft, intimate photos in the rain. And if going outside isn’t possible, I bring extra lighting to create beautiful indoor portraits.
*Pro Tip – if rain is the forecast for your day, consider guest comfort too – extra umbrellas, a covered seating plan, or even blankets can make all the difference.

Here in New England, the weather can change in a heartbeat. April often sees more consistent rain, and summer can bring sudden thunderstorms. But you really never know until your wedding day arrives. I’ve seen days when storm clouds roll in out of nowhere, and I’ve photographed weddings where morning rain cleared just in time for a sunlit afternoon ceremony. But, no matter what surprise the weather had in store, every single couple still ended up with a beautiful day – and photos to show from it.
Rainy wedding days often bring a kind of beauty that sunny skies simply can’t. The clouds create soft, flattering light—whether it’s cinematic and dreamy or moody and intimate—and the weather opens the door for playful touches like umbrellas or bespoke raincoats.
While you can plan so many details of your wedding day, the weather is one of the few things you can’t control. And that’s okay. Some of the most memorable moments happen when you let go of perfection, embrace the unplanned, and allow yourself to be fully present. Those carefree, joy-filled experiences are the ones you’ll treasure long after your wedding day.

With a little preparation and the right mindset, a rainy day can be just as magical as a wedding day with clear skies. Here are some tips to help you feel reassured if you’ve been asking, “What happens if it rains on my wedding day?”
Part of your wedding rain plan should include weather-ready items. These include umbrellas, rain jackets, bridal boots, or waterproof shoes. Like I mentioned earlier, I’ll bring clear umbrellas and protective gear for my camera so you can enjoy your day without worrying about the rain, but it can be helpful for you to have these items on hand as well.
Weather is one of the few things you can’t control, so do your best to go with the flow. Even if it rains in the morning, sometimes it clears up before your ceremony or portraits. Other times, the weather becomes part of your story. Plus, you’ll have soft, intimate, and unique photos that only a rainy day can create.
It’s your wedding day, so try to enjoy it fully, exactly as it happens. Many couples I’ve worked with were actually excited about embracing the rain. It often leads to some of the most memorable moments of their celebration. At the end of the day, your wedding is about honoring your love and getting married. Nothing else matters as much as that.
If you’ve been wondering about what happens if it rains on your wedding day, I hope that you’re feeling a little more comfortable. Rain can bring extra charm, create spontaneous moments, and make your day uniquely memorable.
Ready to bring your wedding vision to life, no matter the weather? I’d love support you along the way.
