Advice

YAY! You’re engaged! Let’s pop the champagne and have some fun! Getting engaged is one of those most exciting moments in your life! So taking the time to do an engagement session is a great way to capture joy and anticipation of what is to come. Not only will these photos commemorate this special time, but they’ll also help you feel more relaxed and confident on your wedding day in front of the camera.

As a Boston wedding and engagement photographer, here are my best tips on how to prepare for your engagement session.

Do I Need an Engagement Session?

While an engagement session is not required, I highly recommend it! Engagement sessions are fantastic for several reasons. First of all, they will help both you and your partner feel comfortable having your photo taken. While you have probably had your picture taken thousands of times, working with a professional photographer will be a different experience. Feeling comfortable with your photographer and knowing what to expect will make your wedding day portraits even better.

Second, it’s a chance to capture more memories in a relaxed, casual setting before the big day. You can get used to my approach with my couples and have time to chat in between outfit changes or locations. This is a great way to make a connection and genuinely get to know your photographer! After all, you will be spending a lot of time together on your wedding day so it is a great time to get to know each other before then!

Plus, your engagement photos can be used for save-the-dates, wedding websites, and even decor at your wedding reception.

What to Expect When You’re Working With Kerri McWade Photography

When you book an engagement session with me you’ll receive a copy of my exclusive digital engagement session guide. This is a comprehensive resource I crafted on how to prepare for your session. This includes all of my favorite location recommendations, outfits, and so much more.

While I don’t work off a strict shot list for engagement photos, I welcome inspiration. I have my own creative direction, but your input is valuable to create photos you’ll cherish. I will focus on capturing your unique dynamics & personalities, ensuring the experience is comfortable for you both. Not all poses and prompts are universal so I tailor the experience to each couple.

Be Yourself & Trust Your Photographer

Feeling nervous about your session is normal, but don’t worry! I understand how awkward it can feel in front of the camera. My goal is to make you feel at ease and guide you through the process so you can enjoy it. Many couples are surprised at how fun and easy the session turns out to be. And yes, I’ll tell you what to do with your hands!

Prepare for Your Engagement Photos Location & Time

Engagement sessions can be scheduled during any time of the year. Choose a season you love or a location that’s meaningful to you, like where you got engaged or had your first date. We’ll select a time together, preferably at sunrise or sunset for the best lighting. Don’t be afraid to make your engagement photos an experience. You can incorporate hobbies and things you love in your session to make it your own!

How to Prepare for Your Engagement Photos

I recommend bringing two outfits: one casual and one dressy. Instead of matching, opt for colors that complement each other. Save your favorite outfit for last so you feel more comfortable and confident in front of the camera.

Props can add a personal touch without being tacky. Feel free to bring your pet, pop some champagne, enjoy your favorite drinks, or even set up a cozy picnic. Bring props that are meaningful to you and your relationship.

If possible, have your engagement ring cleaned professionally or clean it yourself. If you purchased your rings from a local jewelry store most of them will offer professional cleaning for free. I’ll always capture a close-up of your ring during our session so make sure it looks sparkly and fresh!

Looking Your Best

Consider scheduling your bridal hair and makeup trial on the same day as your engagement photos. That way you can make the most of having your hair and makeup professionally done and look and feel your best. Having a fresh manicure will always look great with a neutral color.

If you’re getting a haircut or shaving, do it a few days before to allow your skin time to recover and hair time to settle. Avoid trying out the new spray tan artists right before the session to prevent any mishaps. Remember, less is more.

Post-Session Date Night

Plan a date night (or brunch) after your session to celebrate! It’s a perfect way to end a memorable day together and chat about all that is to come. Plus you will already be looking and feeling your best!

Following my advice and tips on how to prepare for your engagement photos will help you get great photos you are sure to love for years to come! Reach out to Kerri McWade Photography today to book your Boston area engagement session!
